How to Assemble Your Saxophone

  • Attach the neck strap to the hook on the back of the saxophone.
  • Carefully insert the neck into the top of the saxophone body, twisting gently. Never force it.
  • Moisten the reed with saliva or water.
  • Slide the ligature onto the mouthpiece.
  • Place the reed flat against the mouthpiece and tighten the ligature just enough to hold it in place.
  • Gently push the mouthpiece onto the cork of the neck, aligning it so it feels comfortable.
  • Always handle the instrument carefully, especially the keys and rods, as these can bend if knocked.

Holding the Saxophone Correctly

  • Good posture helps with sound quality and comfort.
  • Sit or stand upright with relaxed shoulders
  • Let the neck strap support most of the instrument’s weight
  • Left hand on the upper keys, right hand on the lower keys
  • Fingers should be curved naturally and resting lightly on the keys
  • Avoid gripping the saxophone too tightly.

Making Your First Sound Embouchure and Air

  • You are biting too hard
  • The airflow is uneven
  • First Notes
